Holidays and Celebrations

The Plymouth Brethren community celebrates together throughout the year, with gatherings that reflect our faith and strengthen our bonds.

The Lord’s Supper

The Lord’s Day (Sunday) is itself a weekly celebration, as members gather to remember Christ in the Breaking of Bread and to worship together. This is known as The Lord’s Supper and provides members with a regular connection to our faith and fellowship.

Weddings, baptisms, and the birth of children are also celebrated with joy. These occasions bring families and the wider community together, often with gatherings extending over several days for significant events.

Christmas

Christmas is not observed in the way that is common in mainstream British culture.

Our Church’s emphasis remains on the spiritual significance of Christ’s birth rather than on more recent secular traditions.

Families choose to reflect on this significance as they see most fitting, including engaging in charitable work or other acts of kindness.

Family gatherings and special meals can similarly take place over Christmas, with many members taking the opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones.

Birthdays & Personal Celebrations

Personal celebrations, including birthdays, anniversaries and other milestones, are recognised within families and often by the wider community.

While these occasions may be less elaborate than some contemporary celebrations, they are often valued as opportunities to honour individuals and give thanks.

Calendar Dates

While some celebrations common in British culture are not observed within the Plymouth Brethren community, such as Halloween, we do recognise the importance of other calendar dates.

For example, Remembrance Day is observed respectfully. Throughout history, members of the Plymouth Brethren Christian have served in conflicts, including the First World War and Second World War. This day offers a moment to reflect on their sacrifice, as well as the sacrifice of others who have served on the frontlines to protect our freedoms.
